http://www.ruralvermont.org/

Take their survey.
It's thought provoking, and you know that they're going to take action based on what they learn from us.

They've done such great work, most recently:
-enhancing the rights of Vermonters to get fresh real milk from the farm
-improving the rules around meat processing
-securing Vermont's support of Hemp industry from the first second it is allowed under federal law

Agricultural HEMP events this week all over Vermont!

Rural Vermont will be coordinating a series of events between January 20th and 24th all over Vermont.

from their PR:
"Why is Agricultural Hemp important to Vermont's farmers and the agriculture economy? What are the status of hemp laws in the US and Vermont? How can you get involved in Rural Vermont's Hemp for Vermont Campaign? Join us for a week-long series of hemp events and get answers!

Featured at several events will be two speakers who played key roles in the passage of the law that legalized agricultural hemp in North Dakota. Representative David Monson is a farmer, house representative, and one of the first applicants for a hemp-growing license in North Dakota. Roger Johnson has been North Dakota's Agriculture Commissioner since 1996; he is a farmer with a degree in agricultural economics and a background in agricultural mediation."

So far, locations on schedule include Montpelier, Middlebury, Springfield, Bellows Falls, Hardwick, and Brattleboro.
If you'd like one in your area, they're happy to come your way!

Who knows Lake Willoughby and the great clthing optional beach there on the south side of the lake? I just love that place. It became my spiritual home during my all too brief stay in the Northest kingdom last fall. Does anyone know the status of that house in the tiny state park just above the beach. That was a magical place and I met some verrry interesting people hanging around there. Have a good fouth y'all.

Vermont Public Urban Ritual Experiment (PURE) Dance Workshop

hen: November 10, 2007 (Saturday) 2 - 5 pm, registration starts as 1:30 pm
Where: Capital City Grange on Northfield St, in Montpelier
How much: $20 per person (funds workshop expenses & chapter fund).
The workshop: PURE is an nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting peace & healing in the world. During the workshop we will learn the choreography and establish connections to other chapter members.

What does "PURE - Public Urban Ritual Experiment" mean?

The "P" is for Public. We engage in "guerilla bellydance"-surprising the unsuspecting public with what seem like spontaneous performances. Dancing through the streets, we are seen by thousands of people from all walks of life, people who otherwise may never see this gorgeous, often misunderstood dance form. We also bring attention to different causes that benefit the public, by teaming up with charities and world peace organizations.

"U" stands for Urban. We live in densely populated cities and small towns alike.
Our home is the United States , a global pot brimming with many cultures. Although it's important to honor the roots of Middle Eastern dance and music, in order for our art to be a true reflection of who we are, influences from many other countries will be part of the PURE experience.

"R" is for Ritual. Our dance is a moving meditation. We share our serenity with those around us. Our music is a call to the public, to join us on our journey of transformation. Put them together and you have an entrancing communal ritual.

Last is "E", for Experiment. We take chances. We try new things. Sometimes we fall on our faces, but we always let curiosity and the spirit of exploration guide us. We keep others guessing about what will come next! And we always prepare for the unexpected.

PURE's dance and music are more than steps and notes. Together, they are a living, breathing art form, never stagnant, ever evolving.

In each class spirit is blended with science, through meditation, lecture, plant walks, and hands-on learning. We seek to unite Western modes of learning and healing with ancient traditions of learning from the earth and from spirit. The apprenticeship is intended to be a healing journey for each person, and towards a deeper connection to the earth. The doorways that are opened and the wisdom gained during class will seep into each apprentices home and everyday life. The plants that each student forms relationships with changes their lives deeply, helping to guide and support them through life- body, mind, and spirit.

At the end of the 9 month program, each student will be brought into the inter-connected web of world healers through ritual and celebration, given gifts of initiation, and will be certified from the school in herbal medicine, plant spirit healing, and magical herbalism.

"Healing with plants is probably the most ancient form of wisdom emerging right from the core of Mother Earth. It manifests our deepest connection to our past and to nature. All healing is free and open to us. By preserving this sacred wisdom and teaching others we are again re-establishing our relationship with the Earth." - Andrea Nandoskar, Apprenticeship 2006
Courses taught by Sage L. Maurer -
Certified Herbalist, Plant Spirit Medicine Practitioner, Shamanic Herbalist

Formally trained and certified in herbal medicine at The Blazing Star Herbal School and at The Boston School of Herbal Energetics, Sage is an independent practitioner and teacher of herbal healing, plant spirit medicine, shamanism, and earth-centered spirituality. Sage has studied with many well-known herbalists including Rosemary Gladstar, Susan Weed, Anne McIntyre, Rosita Arvigo, Mary Pat Palmer, Pam Montgomery, Margi Flint, and many others.

In 2001, Sage founded The Gaia School of Healing & Earth Education in Vermont & Massachusetts where she taught workshops and apprenticeships throughout the year, training over 70 apprentices in the past 6 years. Trained in The Wise Woman Tradition of herbal healing, she seeks to help reawaken our ancient memory of the healing plants and our renew our connection to the earth.

This Apprenticeship is open to anyone interested, regardless of their gender, belief system, past experience, or knowledge of plants. We have had both advanced students and beginners as apprentices, and both men and women. Though the course does often stress the energy of the Mother present in the earth, both yin and yang energies present in all things is honored. Women tend to be the majority in our apprenticeships but green men are welcome and greatly appreciated in our circle.

---------->Looking for PERFORMERS w/ act or costumes and skills to PArade "How Berkeley Can you Be?! -----The show must go on.

Hi,
I have a spot reserved in the How Berkeley Can you BE? parade~ and I would like to perform along side a group that allready has worked together. Perhaps, at least 3 or 4 other people. I just want to have fun and I can work around your act.

This is to perform and parade this Sunday Sept. the 30th. I would really like to perform and I allready have some Puppets and masks created and ready to go. another option is, if you have allready signed up for the "how berkeley" parade, I can cancel my registration if I have to and join you.

I have paraded in alot of protests... at Burning Man, and with Bread and Puppet theater in Vermont, (through and internship) and more...
I am a percussionist / puppeteer / performer/visual artist who is working more clowning and dancing into my performances.

here is a link :
www.davidavidson.artistportfolio.net ---- art, puppets
www.myspace.com/summerhilltribal --------music
www.myspace.com/hoptripsoundscape

i have lots of ideas, and can improvise quickly. We could meet once or twice before and then parade at the end of the month.
I have some people who can show up and be extra hands but it would be GREAT to accompany someone who allready has a group, costumes and act together.
My troupe from this summer has moved there own ways now that fall has started, then I got sick, and now.... The show must GO on. : )
I am trying to use the spot I have reserved and ... I just want to have fun parading.... I would like to throw a puppet mask on... then dance and clown around. Please reply soon, as we should meet up this week or next and I need to contact the Parde people w/ changes.

some Options and possibilities:
dancing, acting, clowning, stilts, juggling, flags waving and spinnning, poi juggling, sorry no fire allowed in this specific parade, (not sure why)
I can make an animal costume... like on Fellini's CLOwns, the traditional 2 person cow or horse

and here are puppets and masks I allready have----- www.davidavidson.artistportfolio.net
davidavidson@gmail.com

I would be so happy if you helped me and I could help perform. I allready paid the fees for the parade and everythiing.

Sincerely, David Davidson

"Separate But Equal" is always a scam- let's call our reps on it.

The snow capped Adirondack mounains overlooking Lake Champlain are breathtaking. The views here are paralyzing, the people are culturally diverse, the music scene is happening. I feel like I am in the Hippie mecca !

Cindy Sheehan in Vermont March 2,3,4th

Just got this email from a friend:

As you know, the VT State Legislature recently passed a resolution calling on the US Government to bring the troops home now from Iraq. Now David Zuckerman (P), Burlington, has sponsored a resolution to impeach Bush. Simultaneously, some VT towns are bringing up resolutions to favor impeachment at Town Meetings, some formally, and others in the “other business” section of the agenda, because some select boards have not allowed this item to be warned. If you would like more information about how to bring this up at your town meeting, please contact Dan DeWalt, Newfane selectman, at patrioticresponse@...
Cindy Sheehan of Gold Star Families for Peace, whose son was killed in Iraq, will be speaking in favor of impeachment around Vermont. You may remember her as the woman who camped in front of Bush´s Texas home asking to meet with him so he could tell her what noble cause he had sent her son to die for. She will be joined by others (see below).

These events make up a ten-town, three-day "Town Meeting Democracy Tour," on which
she will be joined by Iraq War veterans Matt Howard and Drew Cameron,
author John Nichols, and Newfane VT citizen Dan DeWalt.
The tour is designed to raise awareness of the rapidly spreading movement to pass resolutions at
Vermont town meetings in favor of impeachment and supporting the troops
by bringing them home now.

Saturday March 3rd, 6:30pm
Castleton State College, Fine Arts Center Auditorium
With John Nichols (formerly of The Nation) and Dan Dewalt (Newfane Selectman)
Free and Open to the Public
-------------
Sunday March 4th, 9:30am- 10:15am
Rutland UU church, West Street, Rutland
Cindy Sheehan will briefly speak and take questions.
All are invited and welcome to stay for church services at 10:30.
-------------
Sunday March 4th at 2:30 pm
Springfield Unitarian Universalist Church on Fairground Road, behind Riverside Middle School.
Cindy Sheehan will briefly speak and take questions.
The event, sponsored by the Springfield Peace and Justice Group,
is free and open to the public.

Here's a quick article about her and the events:

What does it cost to heat a Vermont home?

We currently rent and have our heat included in the rent. We are considering buying a home and are trying to get a realistic idea of what it would cost monthly to own our own home. Please chime in with what it costs to heat your home through the winter. Most likely we're looking at forced air and oil combination, but I'm curious about how many cords of wood wood users go through and what a cord costs. Any ino. is appreciated! Thanks

Brattleboro work exchange for Goddess Camp Sept. 8-10

If you or one or more of your loved ones (including your children) are interested in attending Goddess Camp, we have work exchange opportunities.

http://empowerment-arts.org/goddess-camp.html

Aside from the childcare, none of these work exchanges interferes with the opportunity to participate in all activities. I am hoping that fathers and husbands will support their goddesses by doing childcare/activities.

Materials' fees must be paid in full by all participants (which is $5 - $20 for the weekend depending on the classes in which you participate) and reduced meal cost per person is $3 - $5 per meal ($3 for breakfast and $5 for lunch or dinner). Other than that, we will come up with a fair agreement for work-exchange, while they last. To assure your commitment, you must pay the materials and meal costs in advance. Check with me directly about how to do this.

I have grouped together work-exchange opportunities in the file below. However, feel free to mix and match different categories if you don't want to do the full category. Also, aside from doing full work-exchange, we can make arrangements to reduce the cost of your camp if you just want to do a partial work-exchange or if a full exchange is not available. The exchange rate is $10 / hour.
Considering a move to Burlington ...

Hi all!

I am a native born resident of Massachusetts (they sometimes call us "Massholes") and lived in Seattle for 9 years in the 90's ... I miss it a lot but what I really miss is how beautiful it was, primrarily within view of mountains and near so much water.

I have read that Burlington is similar in scenery to Seattle and I'd like to continue living in Massachusetts, but am considering a move away from Boston at some point because it is insanely expensive and competitive to the point of lunacy in trying to get a good job.

Can anybody speak to what life is like in Burlington for somebody single in their early 40's? (I'm 39 now but wouldn't be moving for a few years).

I've got a diversity of interests (see my tribe affiliations for a general picture) and though I'm not particularly "outdoorsy", I think natural beauty in the landscape is pretty important.

Any feedback will be welcomed.

Thanks!
Rookie Dreaded Black Fly Question

Okay, so in California we don't have black flies and in Santa Cruz we have few mosquitoes, so I need help. A few days after moving here my lymph nodes and glands got really swollen and tender and the areas behind my ears hurt and were a bit itchy, though there were no bites in that area. I did have plenty of mosquitoe and black fly bites though especially at the base of the hairline on my neck. (My 8 year old daughter had the exact same symptoms.)

The glands returned to normalcy and all was fine. This morning they are swollen and hurting again. I got bit last night by probably black flies, but could be mosquitoes. Are my sypmtoms related to that? Is this just a green-horn reaction and as I've lived here longer it will get better? Anyone ever heard of swollen glands as a "normal" reaction to insect bites or is this something totally different going on with me?

coolest village in Vermont?

Hi, I'm trying to drum up some interest in our little village. It's the village of Jamaica, Vermont located in a mountain river valley full of butterflies, rivers and waterfalls.
For such a remote and exotic place it is just 2 1/2 hours from my old neighborhood of Harvard Square in Cambridge. And 3hrs 40 minutes to my friend's house in Brooklyn!
We are selling our place and the more we look for places in our new destination-the more sad we become. This really is a special place and worth the trip up just to see that there are still places in this country that make sense. It's rural and many of the village small business owners here are, well, remember Mrs Olsen on 'Little House on the Prairie'? Mrs Crabitz on 'Bewitched'? Like that...but there is another air about the place-a heavenly one that is unmistakably, undeniably, the little village in the jungle air that is becoming more and more impossible to find.
I speak this way-s- melodramatically, because as I said, we just started looking for properties in Brattleboro and Guilford and it seems 2-3 bedrooms houses made of damp cardboard with a river running through it(the house!!!) for soooo much money.
Our house is an amazing old 1814 hotel in the center of the village of Jamaica. It has a historic pub, ball room, 10 bedrooms, the best front porch in all of Vermont, a bamboo floored retail shop--a tea room and owners unit----and it is well under $500,000.00. It's 485,000. and we have a way of life here like no other.
We run our internet catalog, a non-profit organization, vacation rentals and our retail shop from this grand 6,800 square space-
So, taking a que from the wise person who once said, "You can go to the ocean with a teaspoon, or; You can go to the ocean with a teacup..." we are trying to spread word of our house throughout the creative community. The restaurant kitchen is huge and it even has a huge gas charcoal grill and a ten burner, double oven stove and a walk in fridge!!!
So pass the word around and fingers crossed, someone will find this piece of heaven.

Hello! I've lived most of my life in Los Angeles and it's time to go! My husband, 8 year old son, black cat, pug and I will be moving to the Bennington area. We're looking for a college town that's great to raise a kid in & isn't extremely conservative.

Can you guys tell me about Bennington? We're hip parents, writers/artists/animal lovers/freaks. :D

Howdy,

I will be moving to Vermont in about a month from now. I'm gonna be working as a park ranger at Mt. Philo in Charlotte and living in Ferrisburg. I'm looking for some like-mind people to hang out with. Hit up some shows in Burlington and elsewhere. I'm into the jamband scene, Umphreys, Cheese, Phish, GD, RAQ, Kimock and old school music like Zappa, Clapton, CSNY, etc.
Also I'm looking for some people to play disc golf. I like to get out a few time a week to play. I'm looking to make a few more friends up there to make this a fantastic summer! Hit me up if you wanna hang out! Peace, Newman

AIDS work/Nonprofit work in VT?

Okay, so I'm asking for my brother, not me.

He's currently in Kenya till October, working as a missionary and caseworker at an orphanage and school for HIV+ children. He has BA in English, but almost all of his relevant work has been for non-profits, particularly youth work and working with children with ED. However, his main passion is for working with HIV/AIDS related issues and advocacy. We both grew up in Vermont and lived there for 21 years. I live in Austin, TX, he lives with my family in CT. He has a very strong desire to live either in Burlington or down in Brattleboro. Does anyone know about any AIDS work org's/advocacy centers/outreach type programs in either Burlington or Brattleboro, or maybe even Montpelier?

Brattelboro question

We're considering moving to Brattleboro and would like to know a few things. We are in our 30s and have two young children. I hope to finish my B.A. soon, so I need to be near a college. How are the public schools (for my kids)? I know it's a small town, but is there enough going on to make friends and have a coffee shop or two to hang-out in. Would I find people who I could talk literature with, and I'm not talking about Oprah's book-club here? Is there housing readily available? How's the job market? And most of all is there a college nearby that is in Vermont so I wouldn't have to pay out-of-state tuition?

I know I've asked a lot, so just answer what you feel like. I appreciate any input. Thanks!

Apartments near Trapp Family Lodge?

Jeff and I are planning on moving back to VT for the summer, hes got a waiting job at the Tea Room at Trapps. Anyone have any suggestions for places to find a one or two bedroom apartment for cheap? My aunt suggested Jefferson (I THINK thats what she said) and she thinks that we should move to Enosburgh Falls to be closer to her... lol. Anyway... what we are looking for is:

1) Something inexpensive
2) 1/2 hour or less away from Trapps
3) 1 or 2 bedrooms
4) We will need to rent from the beginning of May til the end of August
5) Ill need to find a job in the area as well... suggestions would be nice (Childcare is my forte)
6) We will need parking spots for 2 cars...
7) Pets would be nice to have but not a necissity... We dnt have any at the moment.
8) What goes on there? Fun stuff? How close is good shopping (Malls and all that) What about tourist type things... will there be tons of annoying tourists running around?
9) Hows the crime levels in the area?

(Well, Im not very good at this... I guess Ill just leave it at Let me know what you know!!!!)

Is there still so much nice Music and Festivals there? Was there 1994/95 an never made it back. It´s just so many places on earth to travel too. Greetings to you...
Love to come back on time, visiting my friends there.

Man, if suicide was an option it would be looking pretty inviting. Gotta get me some antidepressants and sit in front of my "happy light"

Many towns of VT

Howdy all, let me start with a bit of an intro as this is my first topic here! I'm Josh, and not from VT...yet. I spent my childhood in MA, lived in NH from 11-21, then moved to where I am now which is Asheville, NC. Which is a pretty cool town so if you've never been, make a trip to it sometime, you'll like it. Probably =)

Anyhow, My girlfriend and I are planning on moving back to the North East and are planning on looking at several towns in VT: Middlebury, Brattleboro, Rutland, Johnson, Burlington. We are looking for somewhere safe, pretty, and not so far off the beaten path that a job will be hard to find. Also close to a community college would be preferable. So far I think middlebury is the favorite to us. Any of you who know the state better than we have any insight into this? Any info anyone could offer would be great! looking forward to your responses, and to making friends with my future neighbors.

Take Care.

My guy and I are headed back to VT to visit our parents and whatnot... Im planning on stealing him away on sunday (The 10th of October) and Im going to take him along on a real tourist-y type leaf peaper experience!

So far Ive decided that I want to take him apple picking (Champlain Orchards, unless anyone can suggest something better), then off to the Revolutionary War Museum in Orwell, then on a hike somewhere... This is where I need suggestions. Where should I take him hiking. After the hike Im taking him to my favorite place, The Dog Team Tavern. So it would need to be close to that. I was also thinking a corn field maze would be fun, the one at the teddy bear company...

Input would be great!

OK, when I was younger I used to watch "The Frog Prince" starring Helen Hunt and Aileen Quinn. When I moved 6 years ago my copy of the tape was smashed by the stupid moving van grr. I was wondering if any of you know where I could get a copy of the movie, I would be EVER SO GRATEFUL if you could point me in the right direction! Thanks!!

Dear Fans of Vermont, and Vermonters,

We'll be hanging out in Topsham this holiday weekend doing nothing but eating food, watching movies and stoking the fire. If anyone wants to stop in, feel free. We live in a little house in a big field in a small town. For more info: http://www.jessamyn.com/me/visit.html

it's about 17 degrees here at Chez Odd this evening and shoudl be plummeting into the single digits. We've been splitting firewood, making soup, and meeting more neighbors [you never know who you are going to need to move in with if the power is off for more than half a day]. We had snow this morning, second time this year so far. How is everyone else grappling with the impending ice lockdown?

So here I am, living in Baltimore, and they don't have fall colors the way Vermont does. How is the season so far? Is it peaking yet? Has there been a good frost yet? The definition of the seasons is something that I miss alot. Help an ex-pat out?
