how does one go about getting individual health care if they are not going to get benefits from their employer in this state? is there such a think as affordable health insurance. i am moving to brattleboro soon, and the health insurance situation sure seems overwhelming - and expensive.

Re: health insurance
Tue, July 17, 2007 - 9:22 AMIf you income-qualify, the Vermont Health Access Plan is very affordable, and very easy/cool insurance.
There may also be a residency requirement (here for 12 months or something?) but I haven't dealt with that part of it since I moved back here eight years ago...
VHAP is an extension of Medicaid.
Failing that, some people just pick an amount and pay it into a special savings account specifically to cover future medical expenses.
Acupuncture is pretty affordable around here, and I have found it to be exponentially more useful than my official MD.

Re: health insurance
Wed, July 18, 2007 - 12:53 PMYes, it is awful. I do not have insurance and i am 60 years old so it's a damned good thing I'm healthy. I don't know what your financial status is but if you are low income or have children the state has health insurance called VHAP. Just Google VHAP and it will tell you how to apply. There is also a new state program called Catamount Health which goes into affect in October, you might want to check into that. It is supposed to help people who make too much to qualify for VHAP. There a lot of people working to get single payer health care in this state, I only hope it will happen before I get sick. I haven't seen Michael Moore's new movie "Sicko" yet but I will be handing out information at the theater when it shows in St. Johnsbury with petitions to sign in support of this www.healthcare-now.org/hr676.html. Good luck

Re: health insurance
Tue, July 24, 2007 - 2:54 PMMy partner has had VHAP for over a year now, and she got it right away upon moving to Vermont. I don't think there is a time frame where you have to be a Vermont resident before getting into the program. Probably have to have a Vermont i.d. and address though. It's also income based, I'm sure all this info is included in the helpful links from those who have already written. Good luck!
